For my 3rd year university final major project, I had to create a playable environment with multiple rooms. I received permission from a lead concept artist at CD projekt red to use concepts from Cyberpunk 2077, and chose to focus on the brightly coloured Clouds Club. These concepts allowed me to explore a range of styles, materials and colour palettes that I had not previously been able to use in other projects.
Originally I had planned to create three rooms, the main Clouds bar, a VIP private dance room, and a large bathroom. However, as the production of the environment continued, I added three additional areas. I decided to do this in order to enhance the depth and realism of the world. For example, after noticing that the bar would need space to store extra bottles and other supplies, and the staff would need their own facilities, I added a staff room with lockers and shelving. These extra rooms also helped create more variation throughout the scene, as the afterlife basement section would need to be slightly less maintained than the bar on the floor above; the staff room is also much dirtier as it is and area that the customers cannot access.
This project has certainly improved my skills using Unreal Engine 4 buy a substantial amount. I have been able to spend time developing various particle effects, making dynamic materials and creating audio landscapes, as well as improvements to my lighting skills and my overall understanding of how to use the engine efficiently. The addition of a large reptile tank, and a few small plant displays has also given me the opportunity to generate foliage, which is an area I will certainly focus more on in my future personal projects.
I am looking forward to opportunities to showcase more of my skills in my next project, as I have already noticed a considerable improvement in my overall workflow throughout this project.
